On August 7th 1959, the Manchester United team flew to Munich for a friendly match against Bayern Munich and to visit the hospital that had taken care of their injured manager and players eighteen months earlier, after the Munich Air Disaster. United won the match 2-1.

On the 6th of February 1958, the British European Airways Flight 609 crashed in a blizzard on its third attempt to take off from an icy runway at the Munich-Riem airport in Germany. On board the plane was the Manchester United football team, nicknamed at the time 'The Busby Babes', along with a number of supporters and journalists. Twenty-three of the 43 passengers on board the aircraft died in the disaster.
